Beatrice Schleyer

Beatrice Schleyer is a Brooklyn-based photographer, dancer and performance artist. She first learned basic camera operation and darkroom procedure at age 12 at an arts camp. She received a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2006 and enhanced her technical knowledge over the next 3 years working as a photo assistant in the fashion industry. Coming from a background in traditional photographic procedure, her experiences in the world of commercial photography reinforced the need for her to maintain integrity in her personal work. In a society over-saturated with transient and superficial images, she strives to create auratic works and performances that request a deeper level of reflection from her audience.  Beatrice has exhibited her work in California, New York, Miami, and Europe with arts organizations such as Creamhotel, Femina Potens, and Local Project. Her performance work incorporates Butoh, a post WWII Japanese dance form. She has been training in Butoh with the Vangeline Theater, and participated in workshops with other Butoh luminaries such as Yumiko Yoshioka and Katsura Kan. Her first official public Butoh offering took place with the Vangeline Theater this summer at NYC's Howl Festival, and she has presented several of her own solo pieces at NYC art events and parties
