    This photograph is part of the I Am the Inverted Cross series. The series is an attack on the semiotics of organized religion. The non-deferential use of the crucifix and the suggestion of the antichrist echo the visual strategies employed by Black Metal musicians, seeking both a shock factor and a darker philosophical resonance. While Beatrice values many things that Christ had to say, particularly the Sermon on the Mount, she has always found the use of organized religion as a method of popular control and manipulation to be unacceptable. As an artist and self-portraitist, she addresses many sides of her personality; she enjoys the aggression and evil of these images.
