Cream hotel

This photograph is part of the series "Layered" that the artist created for and exhibited at Haired, the group show organized by Creamhotel during Miami Art Basel 2011. The series addresses the theme of hair defining it as an element of prejudgment on a person's identity. In this regard, Maxine states that when we look at a person, we preconceive notions of personality based on clothing, hair, facial features, body type and color. But she wonders: how much do our assumptions warp or shape our perceptions of one another? What judgements do we ascribe to these qualities and how does it limit our ability to truly see each other? This body of work tells us that if we remove features that could reveal a person's character and transform their hair into just shape, texture and color, the meaning of it as marker of identity is doubtful.
